Akshay Kumar, one of the fittest stars in B-Town, just added another sports-and-fitness accolade to his name. The actor's personal parkour gym has won the bronze medal for IOC/IAKS awards -- an international architecture prize for sports facilities.

A couple of years ago, he developed an interest in the sport and converted his huge Lokhandwala flat (when he moved to Juhu) in Skypan building into a parkour gym. Akshay with his son Aarav would regularly practice here.

His gym has been designed by world-renowned architect Daniel Dressen and houses the best equipment in the market. More than 100 candidates participated and Akshay's gym came in third. 117 participants took part from among 26 countries and the actor's gym stood out with its outstanding design and precise realisation.

It won a special distinction. Akshay says, "It's a huge honour for my gym to win a bronze at such a prestigious sports event. The Olympics have always held a special corner in my heart for me (he is the brand ambassador for physically challenged children in Olympics and was the torch bearer in Toronto for the winter Olympics). I owe it all to the unique design given by my architect Daniel Dressen."

Last week the Wait, Wait style team took on Olympic figure skaters, this week we're looking at Rush Limbaugh's Fifth Avenue penthouse. It's on the market for $13.95 million (which is either outrageously expensive or a steal depending on how you value gold leaf and rooms in which Rush Limbaugh has been naked). First up, the bedroom:

Eva: I always had a feeling Rush Limbaugh was lulled to sleep every night by an army of cherubs.
Mike: Sure, an open ceiling in your bedroom looks beautiful, but who wants to clean up all the bird poop?
Ian: Oh, snap, Mike! Your l'oeils just got tromped!

Now, the guest bedroom...

Ian: Who do you commission to get a painting of a Corona commercial on your wall?
Mike: They actually shot a version of Castaway where Tom Hanks washes up into this room.

Next up, the bathroom...

Eva: Those poor, poor people in the apartment building across the street. The things they've seen.
Doug Berman: That bathtub is full of Percocets.
Ian This is nice because if there are ever two Rush Limbaughs in here, the bathing one can watch the showering one.
Mike: But the mural of the toilet in here has confused many guests, with disastrous results.

Next, the living room...

Mike: Believe it or not, there are no actual windows or fireplaces in this room. It's all murals.
Peter: Like at Hogwarts, this ceiling mimics the sky outside, except here it's always sunny and there's no capital gains tax.
Eva: Does anyone else think it's weird that he has a tiny version of his living room at one end of his living room?

And now the study...

When interior designer Susan Stutheit sits down with her clients, she starts by asking them to define their priorities about the space.

Is it going to be a place for entertaining?

Will there be a television in the room?

Who will use the room the most?

Usually she is able to find some middle ground between husbands and wives.

And that's the starting point.

Today's homes are made to accommodate families, but it's not unusual to have separate spaces for men and women - sometimes within one room, sometimes in separate rooms.

The division of the sexes at home started in the Victorian era. Upper-and middle-class homes had several gender-specific rooms - a sewing or tea room for the women and a smoking or billiards room for the men.

That 19th century floor plan couldn't be more different from the suburban American 1950s layout that emphasized family space - and a place to watch television together.

Houses don't have to be all of one or the other, according to Stutheit.

Stutheit, a designer at Sutter Place Interiors, sees a variety of options for couples who wish to have individual areas in their homes.

A new trend in master baths, for example, is completely separate spaces instead of the traditional double-sink vanity.

"Women like a place for their makeup and electric appliances that is apart from the guy's area," she said.

Men then have their own sinks, usually near the shower. And, yes, the area may include a small TV.

"Men really like to have a television set in as many rooms as possible," she said with a laugh.

Kitchens, which often are connected to family rooms, now are much more than just the center for meals. "Women often set up their own space, with a place for a laptop, desk or comfy chair for reading," Stutheit said.

If the kitchen is used by two cooks, it is a completely different dynamic. In that case, the area may be divided by tasks - baking or food prep or even a coffee nook.

Other combination spaces, such as a large master bedroom closet, can have gender-specific areas, too.

One way to do that is with customized storage and finishes.

On the guy's side, tie and belt holders, robe hooks, cedar blocks and built-in drawers in a cherry finish.

Women may prefer more shoe cubes, a jewelry insert and bins in decorative prints, which may hold purses.

Sometimes the seating solutions chosen for a room hint at who is going to spend the most time there, Stutheit said.

Women love sofas, she said. They like to curl up and get comfy.

But the "man chair," which may be a recliner or an oversized chair and ottoman, signals this is a guy space, she said.

Having an entire room to yourself is a luxury, but extra bedrooms often are pegged as craft or hobby rooms. They generally are designed for women, and the style reflects that.

Basements, on the other hand, are usually the domain of the man in the house, and the decor reflects that - with a large-screen television or even a spectacular workshop.

In a 2008 National Association of Home Builders study, done before the economic downturn, specialty spaces were becoming more important.

The mudroom, separate laundry rooms and spaces for kids' projects were listed as well as spaces for adult children and aging parents.

With the trend toward smaller homes and remodeling existing spaces, it is hard to tell who will actually end up with any extra square footage in today's homes.

When most people move into a new home, there is some changes that they want to make. The rules of interior design are especially powerful when it comes to the ladies of the house who can walk through any home and easily spot furniture that needs to be moved and cabinets that need refacing. The best course of action is to try and buy the new items piece by piece instead of all at the same time. This will actually save you money in the long run as you can get a better deal as the pieces that you want go on sale over the time that you are purchasing them. There are plenty of furniture dealers around the world and all you need to do is search through them instead of dealing with only one place. There is a matter of finding all the best for the best prices and that is not hard when you take and do a little research on the subject.

If you are planning on doing any painting as part of your home improvement project then it is best to do so before you have moved in. This will save you a lot of hassle as it is hard to find a place to put everything when the house is full of furniture and other items. Paint does not take a long time to dry so it should not hold up the moving in process for very long. The best course of action is to go with the higher quality of pain. The better the quality the better coverage you get when you are painting in the darker colors. If you are painting before you move in then you have the option of using a paint sprayer with a lot more ease. This will cut your painting time in half and will save you money in the long run as you use about half as much paint as you do with the brush and roller method.

Don’t forget to check all the walls for holes before you start any projects. It is easier to reface a wall when there is nothing else going on. You will need to read up on wall refacing before tackling it to make sure that it is done properly. If not then you may end up with a not so nice looking wall that is full of dimples and holes and other unsightly blemishes. Hiring a professional is the best way to go when you have something that needs done with the walls. A professional drywall contractor can easily repair all the problems in less than a day and most likely for a fraction of the cost that you would pay if you tried to do it yourself and messed it up.

Interior design is a fun and exciting time for a lot of people but it can also make for a lot of stress and cost if you are not careful. Before tackling any home improvement project you should first make sure that you have the required skills and funds to complete the project. If you don’t then it is best to hire a professional. More than likely they will be able to save you money in the long run even though their fees sound like they are high. They do have the right to charge higher fees as they have spent years learning their trade. Looking good means feeling good for interior designer Jan Showers. And in tough times, it’s especially important to surround ourselves with a little luxury. Showers, whose elegant spaces look pulled from the silver screen, opens the doors on opulent retreats in her new book, Glamorous Rooms (Abrams, $50). She spoke with us recently from her Dallas-area home.

Q: In the foreword to your book, fashion designer Michael Kors mentions meeting you in the 1980s, when “design was at a low point.” Where does design stand in 2009?

A: As far as interiors are concerned, and fashion, too, design is in a pretty good place. I would give it at least an A-minus. People are more educated about design; they have discovered what is appropriate. I don’t have people coming to me who want to put over-the-top drapery in a small cottage, for example.

Q: How does glamour fit into this economy?
A: If you look at the Depression and the movies that were popular then — The Thin Man series with Myrna Loy and William Powell, My Man Godfrey with Carole Lombard and William Powell — the movies were very much about people who were glamorous. Whether it’s going out and buying a new book or going out and buying a new belt, we all need a little glamour in our lives.
Q: What are your current inspirations?
A: I am very inspired by nature, and I am very inspired by the change of seasons. I’m inspired by magazines, and I’ve always been inspired by movies, especially movies from the late ’30s and early ’40s. Fashion inspires me, as well, but I’m more into style than I am into fashion. In my interiors I try to be timeless, and I do the same with my clothes. Things that look like the 1960s that never go out of style.
Q: Mad Men, perhaps?
A: I really do love Mad Men. My husband will tell you I am obsessed with it. I don’t miss it. I record it, I subscribe to it and have it on my laptop so I can see more detail. If you look back at Slim Aarons’ photography in the ’60s, you see the styles that we’re seeing on Mad Men now.
Q: Describe your favorite room.
A: In our house, it’s a room where I am surrounded by books and a fireplace. It’s my favorite room to be in, because I get to relax there, too. There’s a sun porch we did here in Dallas that I’m very fond of. When I walk in there, I get a great feeling. The room was done in keeping with the 1920s, when the house was built, with fabrics from Rose Cummings. It has windows on three sides, and you look out and see these beautiful vistas. I love it that nature is coming inside. It’s a very happy room. Another favorite is a private library with navy blue walls. That wonderful dark lacquer always gives such a cozy feeling. Books are everywhere in that room.
Q: You have emphasized comfort. How do glamour and comfort fit together?
A: There can be no glamour without comfort. What makes a room glamorous is, yes, the surroundings, but the people in it have to be comfortable. The room has to be inviting. You have to say, “I really want to be in this room,” maybe with my feet curled up on the sofa.
Q: What elements bring glamour to a space?
A: Eye-level lighting is super important, particularly lamps. That lighting has the best effect on how people look. The way they age actors in movies is just overhead lighting. I always put lamps in dining rooms, which surprises people. But they add that wonderful glow. The right color can definitely create a glamorous mood, and I always want people to have books in their house, whether they are stacked on a table or on shelves. These are things people can do without spending money. A lot of people say is it OK to have a mirror in every room. I say it’s not OK not to. A mirror can add a window on a wall, and it also adds an element of sparkle or shimmer. Collections of glass are always good. You can find pretty glass at Target. You can find collections of glass at high-end, middle and low price points.

In this picture you can see a beautiful minimalist bedroom when black and white were used to catch the eye and sharpen the decorating scheme. The use of black and white in decorating gives a fresh, clean, and unquestionably sophisticated and elegant look to any room. Finally to make this interior design more complete there was used the color yellow to add a dash of sunshine and warmth to the room final aspect.

White is the most commonly used color in interior design, especially in areas where bathing, cleaning and food preparation are prevelant. This is due to the fact that you can see anything that appears on white and wipe it up, keeping the surfaces clean and germ free. White combines well with black to form a stunning high contrast look. With the popularity of minimalist homes, decorating is lending towards using neutrals again. Keeping the interiors crisp white and clean, with often the use of subtle textures in kitchen bench tops, carpet or timber floors. Today I’ve found a great example of using white in interior design, combined with a little black. The final result is an elegant design with clean lines. Thanks to a wonderful reader the mystery of of Sag Harbor is solved!! Actually the true title of this home is Sagg Road and it is the the Hampton's summer home of architects Bernt Heiberg and Bill Cummings of Heiberg Cummings Design. Their home was featured in the July 2007 issue of Home and Garden.

Interestingly, this home really has many of the popular trends we are seeing now but was completed in early 2007. A great testament to the vision and design aesthetic of Heiberg and Cummings.

Here is another view of the dining area, which we had not seen. I love the mix of chairs and the mix of woods and painted pieces.

They also design furniture, and have a collaboration with the famous Hodnebo company in Norway. The corner chair is an example.

In interior design, a focal point is important in every room. It could be a large window or painting or an interesting art piece. In your living room, arrange your furniture around a focal point. Put your biggest piece of furniture first (like the sofa) then continue with the smaller pieces of furniture down to your accent pieces.

● Consider the size of your living room when you buy the furniture. Don't buy oversized pieces if your room is not that big. It will make your room smaller and cramped. And also don't buy tall furniture if your ceiling is low, they will make the ceiling appear lower.

Many of us Filipinos tend to buy living room furniture "sets" with a sofa, two matching side chairs, with matching coffee and side tables. Be different, don't match the couch with the side chairs. In fact, in interior design, it is more fashionable to have different styled pieces put together like a modern sofa with classic or antique side chairs and different styled tables.

● If you plan to put several picture frames on the walls. it is a good idea to group them together by theme and arrange them inside an imaginary frame. They can be the focal point of the room.

● Before you buy you dining room set, take a good look at your space. Be sure that there is ample room to walk around the dining set even if all the seats are occupied. Interior design has a lot to do with ergonometrics, not just appearance. We Filipinos have the tendency to buy bigger dining sets than our space can accommodate and push one side of the table against the wall.

If your living and dining area is on the same room, you may use a different flooring material on the dining area to delineate the space from the living area. Or you may put an area rug on your dining area for definition. A free standing screen is another good option.

● Avoid using fluorescent (white) lighting in the living and dining areas. Food looks more inviting under incandescent (yellow) light and people's complexion too look better under yellow light. But if you really like to use fluorescent light, combine both white & yellow light at the same time.

● If you plan to put a chandelier above your dinning table, don't put it up so high. Lower it 3 to 4 feet from the table top.

● Aside from your direct light source above the dining table (a chandelier for example), add some pin lights around the room and a dimmer switch to make your surroundings more pleasing to the eye. Do the same with your living room.

● It is ok to put family pictures on the living room but don't put so many, specially school diplomas and trophies. They are better put in the den or your bedroom.

Home theaters have quickly become a must-have for practically every family. From the simple family room setup to a much more elaborate stadium-seating wonder, today’s home theaters aren’t just for the wealthy anymore. What makes one home theater stand out from another is much more than just how it’s equipped, it’s also how it looks. The décor of a home theater is conducive to how well the room functions as an entertainment mecca for family and friends as well as how it shows when the lights are up. Creating a warm and inviting home theater is easy to do on any budget. Here are some ideas for creating a theater for all to enjoy.

Start with the basics. Paint the walls and ceiling black. For the flooring, choose an easy-to-clean surface or a dark-colored berber carpet. When it comes to lighting, choose recessed lighting and simple wall sconces. Add dimmer switches for a realistic ambiance. If your budget allows, consider building two levels of “stadium seating”. With some sturdy plywood and a few two-by-four blocks of wood, you can elevate one area of seating above another to ensure everyone has a great view.

Speaking of seating, a number of furniture stores now carry theater seating -- the equivalent of two to four recliner chairs linked together with cup-holder armrests. These pieces can be found in a multitude of colors and fabrics, with the most popular being leather and suede fabrics. If you have a smaller space or prefer a more intimate area, purchase two recliners in dark leather or other fabric. A simple end table can serve as a shared table between the two chairs. For a larger selection, turn to the Internet where you’re sure to find the large 27x40 poster from your favorite classics. Oversized poster frames are relatively inexpensive and can be picked up at a variety of art, framing or crafts store. Check out a discount fabric store for rich, heavy red velvet that can be used to frame the television screen, to block light from windows or, in lieu of paint to cover the walls. Use excess fabric to create a red carpet path that leads from the door of the room to the seating areas.

No home theater is complete without refreshments. If space allows, install a built-in or freestanding bar. If creating a built-in bar, include a sink and cabinets for storing glassware and miscellaneous kitchen items. A complete home theater bar should include a microwave, mini refrigerator stocked with soda, juices and bottled water and for the nostalgic, an authentic popcorn popper guaranteed to fill your space with inviting aromas.

For the sake of convenience, you can purchase or build a media storage cabinet and/or entertainment system to house your audio/visual components as well as your DVD collection. If possible, choose pieces that are similar in color to your walls so they blend into the room rather than serving as a visual distraction.

Finally, when selecting the focal point of your home theater -- the equipment -- keep in mind that you can easily find speakers that are installed into the walls for a clean, less cumbersome appearance. The exteriors of these in-wall speakers can be painted and treated to blend seamlessly. If a drop-down projection screen isn’t in your budget, a large standard television with surround sound will do nicely. Add a tuner and some speakers for maximum sound quality. A home theater is a fun, relaxing place for families to spend time together as well as to entertain. The décor of the room should be about comfort and subtly allowing you to enjoy favorite movies or programs in the welcoming retreat of your own home.

By choosing furniture a piece at a time, you will come up with a unique look that is all your own. Use your ingenuity and imagination to create a rare look that reflects your own style. This can be easily done on a limited budget.

Let's talk about some of the different styles:

Traditional Style

Traditional decorating covers many periods and can include furniture designs from the very elegant to those of the more simple American tradition. You can find good reproductions that look as beautiful as the hard-to-find antiques.

Accessories are more elaborate. Portraits and paintings have double matting with carved or gilded frames. Tables are made of dark wood and have a good number of accessories and floral arrangements. Lighting in the room emphasizes the warmth and richness of the furnishings.

Country Style

Country decorating is informal and cozy. It can be more romantic, like an English cottage, or spare like a Shaker farmhouse.

Antique furniture is usually handcrafted and fabrics are plaid, tweeds and prints. Accents include quilts, old toys and dried flowers.

Contemporary Style

A contemporary style is more dramatic. The furniture is usually low profile and sleek. Simplicity is key in a contemporary living room. Low furniture arrangements are used to give the room and open and uncrowded feeling.

Room accessories usually include one-of-a-kind art pieces that are dramatic and colorful. Indirect lighting is deflected from the ceiling and walls and can add to the drama of the contemporary living room.

Transitional Style

Transitional decorating brings furnishings from different eras together. This creates a room with a unique flair and is usually not limited to just one style. Window treatments are more simple, and often, window treatments are not used at all. Furniture is larger and has simple, straight lines to compliment smaller pieces that have soft, curved lines.

Room accessories are limited to just a few outstanding pieces. Use recessed lighting to keep it low key and to feature architectural fixtures for drama.

Having a well presented front door, nicely painted and with attractive door furniture will give a good first impression. Perhaps add some flower baskets and foliage around the front windows to add colour.
New technological gadgetry can be very attractive to buyers. This may include well-planned lighting, state of the art sound systems and contemporary fireplaces.
Top of the range fridge freezers, washing machines and dryers will create an image of luxury and a lifestyle very appealing to the buyer. But be sure to make them aware what appliances are included in the sale.

STAGING

Many buyers are looking for a house that is ready to move straight in to. If you do not need to carry out any major renovations or your budget won’t allow for it, be sure to spend some time making each room look its best.
Walls- a lick of paint in a neutral colour will immediately freshen up a room and make it look clean and smart.
Storage- Store away any unnecessary clutter. Clear floors and surfaces can make a big impact aesthetically on the calmness of a room.
Kitchen- instead of installing a completely new kitchen, you could opt to economically change the cupboard doors and handles. This is an inexpensive way of updating the kitchen and creating an immediate impact. Additionally, try staging your kitchen by being selective about the appliances you have on display. Why not use a large bowl of fruit and a striking flower arrangement to add some spirit to the kitchen.
Bathroom- dirty or discoloured grouting can be a real turn off. Try to rectify this by using a specialist grout cleaner first. If this doesn’t work then re-grouting all the tiles would be a good idea. It will freshen up the walls instantly. Apply the same staging tips to the bathroom as suggested for the kitchen. Hide away mismatched cosmetics and bottles as this will create a cluttered look. Introduce a plant, a stylish selection of towels and two or three strategically placed toiletries. Always keep a window ajar and perhaps use a room freshener. Lastly give the suite and any mirrors and good clean and buff them till they sparkle.
